Life's short. That's not really why I eat my dessert first, but it is. It's not out of any fear of dying and not being able to enjoy my dessert. Rather, it's out of an absolute love for the desserts life offers.
It doesn't mean we don't enjoy life's entrees, the "meat" of life. But we love the desserts. So why not enjoy them when we want them? It doesn't have to mean we're not being "responsible," all it means is we're taking the time to revel in the things we really love. And sometimes, to really enjoy the meat, we need to satisfy our urge for the sweet things too.
What desserts does life offer you that you think you have to delay? Maybe by tasting the dessert, you'll satisfy your craving for that sweet whatever-it-is and appreciate the meat more. Maybe the dessert is some time to yourself. Or some time with friends. Maybe it's just a movie. Maybe a book.
We like to think we have to put off the good until we've done our duties. But if we scatter the "good" around, in between all those other little tasks we assign ourselves, maybe we'll do the tasks better and, who knows?, enjoy them more. Isn't that what it's about? Wouldn't it be nice to really enjoy all of it?
Life is about living to the fullest. If you fill yourself with your "duties" and don't enjoy its sweetness, you're missing out. So I invite you to join me today in eating your dessert first: What yumminess will you choose?
