Humor is a great gift to us. It's very hard to stay upset or angry or sad when you hear something that strikes your funny bone. Often, we find ourselves in situations that frustrate the heck out of us but where we have no control...a boss that drives us nuts, for example, or a teenager mouthing off at us for the umpteenth time. In these situations, we need a quick "out" in our heads so that we don't stay there and fume all day. Having a "toolkit" of things that make you laugh can be very helpful in situations such as these to de-fuse the energy around you and help you look away from what you have made so "important" in that moment.
If you have a situation or person that continually frustrates you in your life, I encourage you to put together a "toolkit" of things that make you laugh. The things in there can be anything at all: Jokes, past situations that have made you laugh, an animal antic that cracks you up every time, picturing the person involved in a humorous situation, anything at all. You want things that really amuse you, things that it's really hard for you not to smile or laugh at when you think about them. Then, the next time your person or situation frustrates you, think of one or several of the things in your toolkit and see if that defuses some of the energy around you. The point is merely to get some of your attention away from how serious you've made the situation, because once you're able to do that, you're open to many more ways to look at it and thus many more potential solutions.
