Many of us go through life not ever thinking about that. Others of us follow our dreams, but often in doing so we get caught up in the dream part and forget about why we had the dream to begin with.
Each one of us is unique and has unique gifts to offer the world. I know, it's been said a million times before, but it's a message that bears repeating because there's truth to it.
Do you want to be successful? Every path involves ups and downs, and when we're in the downs, there are a few questions we can ask ourselves to help us stay on track. The question of what your gifts are and whether you're using them is one of the most important. Why? Two reasons. First, by answering such a question your are acknowledging that you have gifts. This puts you in a more positive mindset, and positive attracts positive. The second reason this question is so important is that in answering it it gives you a plan of action while you're waiting out a "down" time. There is always something more you can do with the gifts you have, no matter how small it is.
When we are aware of our gifts and are using them, we are being contributors. This makes us feel good about ourselves, and when we feel good about ourselves, we invite more good into our lives. Do you want to feel good? You don't have to look outside yourself for that - ever. All the tools you have for feeling good about yourself and life in general are within you. There's nowhere else to look. Your gifts are exactly that - gifts to the world, and also gifts to you. You can't give without receiving.
So next time you're feeling like you're not moving fast enough on your path (or any time you think of it, for that matter), ask yourself, what are my gifts, and am I using them? Answer it, and act, and I guarantee you'll feel better.
