Why do we not do things that are good for us? Everyone has something in their life they've committed to at one time or another and then abandoned - healthy eating, for example, or a regular exercise routine. Or quitting an addiction. Why is it that it's so hard for us to stick to things when we know they will ultimately make us feel really good?
I think the answer is that we don't believe we deserve it. We don't deserve to feel good, and so when we start something that gets us feeling good, it freaks us out because we don't believe we deserve it, and we abandon it.
But here's something to think about too. The universe is constantly expanding. This is an established fact. Nothing is destroyed without something new forming. In religious terms, it's called the doctrine of continuous creation. God is constantly creating. There is no such thing as un-creating. And, if you believe in God, what God creates is good. And yet, we humans, for some reason, believe that we don't deserve for our lives to continue to expand in the same way as everything else. We don't believe we deserve good.
We belong in this world. Whether you believe we are here for a purpose or not, we still belong. We are made of the same substance as everything else, and, if you believe in God, the same substance as God. We are all made of the same substance, and therefore there can't be something or someone that doesn't belong.
Something that belongs deserves. Does one child deserve more love than another? Does one animal deserve to live more than another? We belong here. We all deserve all that's good in life. Period. We all deserve to be loved, we all deserve to feel good. We are co-creators with God. We are made in God's image, and so it is in our nature to create, create, create. And yet what we do is un-create with our thoughts of undeservedness. We un-create our own good. The more we accept the good in our lives, the more good we ourselves create, and the more good we create for ourselves, the more good is created for others. To believe we don't deserve blocks good not only from us but from others as well. Today, I encourage you to join me in contemplating the subject of deserving. What good are you not allowing yourself because you feel you don't deserve it? You are a child of God, a child of the Universe, a child of Nature. You belong here. You are as important as everything else here. You belong, and so you deserve. And what you deserve is good.
